Health Is Entering the Shaadi Conversation — And It’s About Time

In India, we’ve always taken marriage seriously.

We match kundalis, check family backgrounds, even consult astrologers about mangal dosh and marriage muhurat. But when it comes to matching something just as important — our health — the conversation often stops.

That’s changing.

A new bill introduced in Parliament by MP Dr. Shrikant Shinde is asking:
What if every Indian couple was screened for serious genetic and infectious health risks before they married?
Not to stop them — but to prepare them. To inform them. To protect their future children.

Let’s break it down — in simple terms, with full respect for your love, your privacy, and your right to choose.

What’s in This Bill?

In July 2019, Dr. Shinde introduced the Free and Compulsory Pre-Marital Genetic Testing Bill in the Lok Sabha. His idea was bold, clear, and rooted in public health:

🧬 Before marriage, every couple should undergo a free health screening — particularly for hereditary conditions like thalassemia and sickle cell anemia.

The couple would receive a Premarital Compatibility Certificate, valid for 6 months, and submit it at the time of marriage registration.

The government would fund and organize the tests through approved labs, ensuring confidentiality and dignity throughout the process.

The goal? Reduce the number of children born with serious, preventable genetic disorders.
In Dr. Shinde’s words: “We check everything before shaadi — salary, looks, family status. Why not health?”

And honestly… he’s not wrong.

Why It Matters: Real Numbers, Real Lives

Every year in India:

  • Over 10,000 babies are born with thalassemia major — a painful, lifelong blood disorder requiring regular transfusions.
  • More than 45 million people carry the thalassemia or sickle cell trait — often without knowing it.
  • If both partners are silent carriers, their child has a 1 in 4 chance of being born with the full-blown condition.

That’s not drama. That’s science.
And it’s preventable — if caught early.

💬 But Isn’t Mandatory Testing… Too Much?

That’s where things get sensitive. And rightly so.

Mandating a blood test before marriage touches deeply personal ground — privacy, trust, tradition. So the moment this bill was introduced, people had questions:

  • Isn’t this against personal freedom?
  • What if families misuse this information?
  • Will someone be labeled “unmarriageable” if they’re a carrier?

These are real concerns, and as a health-first brand deeply rooted in Indian culture, Medical Kundali stands for dignity above all.

That’s why we believe:
👉 Awareness should never come with shame.
👉 Preparation should never mean judgment.
👉 Health conversations should build relationships, not break them.

What This Bill Gets Right

Despite the debate, there’s a lot this bill gets right:

✅ It makes health part of the marriage prep — where it always belonged.
✅ It offers testing for free — so that no couple has to choose between their wallet and their well-being.
✅ It focuses on informed choice, not banning marriages.
✅ It mandates privacy, so test results are never used to harm or shame.
✅ It centers the next generation’s health — especially in a country where genetic conditions are rising, and often go undetected.

In short, it’s a love-first health law in disguise.

What It Still Needs

That said, mandatory is a heavy word.

While the intention is good, forcing couples to take a test could backfire:

  • People might skip registering their marriages to avoid the test.
  • Families could misuse results or pressure couples to call off weddings.
  • Women might face more scrutiny if results are misunderstood.

Instead of mandating, we believe in mainstreaming.

Let premarital health checks become a natural part of modern shaadi prep — like mehendi, sangeet, or even kundali matching.
Let’s build a world where couples say:

“We’re doing this test — not because someone forced us, but because we care.”

The World Is Already Doing It

Countries like Cyprus, Iran, and UAE have seen real results after introducing premarital genetic screening — with fewer children born with lifelong diseases.

In India too, states like Goa and Maharashtra have explored similar ideas.
And the Government of India recently launched the National Sickle Cell Mission, which encourages screening in high-risk communities before marriage.

So this isn’t just policy talk.
It’s a growing movement — one Medical Kundali is proud to be part of.
